The Land of the Free Won’t Succumb to Socialism Without a Fight

I attended a gathering of 50 conservative organizations last week, a well as a statewide political party convention, and I took dozens of calls on my nightly radio show. There are a lot of people who are not feeling that this country is still the land of the free, as written in our national anthem.

I even had an advanced placement high school senior ask me during a speech recently, “Is this country headed toward socialism?”

I answered yes, but it is not too late to stop it.

Many people are feeling that a free-market economy, free enterprise and freedom itself are rapidly being taken away by the Obama Administration and the unprecedented power grab by the Democratic leaders in Congress.

Consider the evidence: Unprecedented government spending and spending proposals have this nation on a collision course with economic disaster.

New taxes on carbon emissions, and new taxes to raise revenue to pay for an undefined version of “universal health care”, even though the federal government has failed at managing the current socialized system (Medicare) effectively and cost-efficiently.

Members of Congress are even considering imposing a tax on soft drinks such as Coke and Pepsi. Sugar is the new “sin tax,” along with alcohol and cigarettes.

And when the administration says its partial ownership in big banks and automobile companies is temporary, let’s remember that the income tax withholding law was temporary in 1943, and that the use of Social Security funds for general revenue use were temporary in 1969.

This is 2009 and they are still temporary.

Presidents Clinton, Bush and Obama are responsible for the mounting federal national debt, which will exceed $18 trillion in 10 years if we do not stop it. None of them used their veto power effectively to simply stop the growth in federal spending.

Before we can reverse a disastrous financial future for this country, we must first stop the growth in spending, and the president is the only elected official who can singularly make that happen.

Legislation is pending to restrict our freedom of speech (Fairness Doctrine), our right to a secret ballot (Employee Free Choice Act) and our right to own a gun unless we first satisfy a whole new list of government regulations.

If we underpay our estimated income taxes for the current year, then we are assessed interest and a penalty. If we overpay our taxes we get a refund but with no interest, and of course we cannot assess a penalty against Big Brother.

If the new Treasury Secretary did not pay some taxes owed, then it is an honest mistake according to President Obama. If we do not pay some taxes owed, it’s a criminal investigation. And we are guilty until proven innocent.

U.S. businesses that make profits in other countries are considered tax cheats if they do not bring those profits back to the U.S. for immediate double taxation.

But there is some good news! Attendees of the gathering of conservative organizations, the political party convention, radio show callers and even the high school senior expressed a recurring sentiment in 10 words:

“We the People are still in charge of this country.” And they are not going to give in to the socialism express.

This nation was not born without a fight, and it will not die without a fight.
