Some high
temperatures from Europe today:
• Moscow -1 F
• Kiev 0 F
• Warsaw 0 F
• Budapest 1 F
• Prague 7 F (a
veritable heat wave)
In related news, it
was announced today that former vice-president Al Gore will publish
another book on global warming, entitled "An Inconvenient Truth," in
April. The shivering residents of the aforementioned cities can only
hope that such climate change is on the way, and soon. Unfortunately
for them, the only warming going on is that from the hot air
emanating from Gore's mouth. And as massive as that may initially
sound, I don't think even it can raise the ambient outdoor
temperature in central and eastern Europe.
I'm not sure which
is a more frightening thought--that Gore and his fellow
environmentalist liberals think they can control the weather, or
that they think they should. Either way, it represents some enormous
egos seriously run amok. This should temper the instinct to
otherwise laugh off the fear mongering sequel to "Earth in the
Balance," and take seriously the threat to liberty and freedom it
really is. For the goal of those into radical environmentalism is
nothing short of total control, and the truth is but an impediment
to the movement.
Bluntly put, there
is no hard science behind any of the warming claims. Even if there
is undisputed data showing warmth over the last century or so, that
is hardly a sufficient sample size to indicate anything
meaningful--no different than extrapolating conclusions from
temperatures taken only in January or July. Climate is like geology;
the clock runs extremely slowly and the ability to show changes and
trends takes far more data (of a far more reliable nature) over a
far longer time period than humanity has had the technology to
collect. As such, it is going to be quite some time before a truly
scientific proof of warming can be produced.
And common sense
ought to tell us that over such long climatological stretches,
conditions are bound to change back and forth from time to time.
After all, at times Earth has both been hot and humid enough to
support dinosaurs and cold enough for an Ice Age with woolly
mammoths. To mess with this natural process--especially without
knowing a problem actually exists, the exact nature of it, and
precisely what needed to be done to correct it--would be both
arrogant and reckless, and could cause far more damage than if Earth
were left alone to continue to do what it otherwise has been for
millennia.
Gore and his
near-hysterical environmentalist brethren are little more than flim-flam
artists, con men playing on people's emotions so that they might get
power and control over pretty much everyone and everything. In the
70's it was the coming New Ice Age; today, it's warming. (What the
phony cause du jour will be in 2030 is anyone's guess.) Whatever it
takes to get you scared enough to hand over power to them in order
to "fix it." Once that power is had, nothing would be beyond their
reach to prohibit--from entire industries down to your can of
hairspray--if they can simply claim it causes "warming." It's just
another card in their little game of political three-card monte,
except the stakes aren't a couple bucks for a street hustler--it's
your freedom to choose how to live your life, from what vehicle you
drive to where you live, right on down to that hairspray being an
aerosol or pump (or forcibly replaced by gel).
Even if Gore and
his friends were correct on the facts, their "solution" is nothing
of the sort. What good can all sorts of government regulations
possibly accomplish, other than to give him the massive power he
seeks? Does Gore really think that, had he been around 25,000 years
ago, legislation would've stopped the glaciers in their tracks and
forced them to beat a hasty retreat? Do environmentalist types
really think they have the ability, much less the expertise, to
control the weather? And is someone with that utter lack of humility
fit to have power on such a grand scale? Again, I'm not sure which
is more frightening--that they think they can, or that they think
they should. Either way, they should not be allowed to try.
"Global warming" is
just another weapon used in the relentless assault on the liberty
and freedom we enjoy. Make no mistake: at its heart, this has
nothing to do with weather and everything to do with restricting
your choices and controlling your behavior, simply because another
group of people thinks they have the authority to judge and judges
your choices wrong. We should be willing to sweat and to shiver for
the sake of protecting this precious inalienable endowment from the
Creator. In accepting the responsibility that comes with it, we
should make good individual choices so that we don't give the
warming con game any more credibility than it may already have. And
we need to stay vigilant against the real foe--government control
that has already proven far more dangerous to humanity than climate
change ever could.
In the meantime,
give me some SPF 10,000 sunblock (just in case), and some sturdy
thermal long-johns for the good people of Moscow...
