Leap Year, Schmeap
Year! The Last Thing We Need is More February
Oh, great. It’s another Leap Year, and that means we all get an extra
day this month.
Usually there are 28 days in February. This year there will be 29 days.
That’s 24 more hours. One thousand four hundred and forty more minutes.
And . . . oh, well, I’ll leave it up to you to figure out how many more
seconds.
The sad thing about having an extra day in February is that February is
already the worst month of the year, at least as far as I’m concerned.
For that reason alone it shouldn’t ever be another day longer. Instead,
February should be another day shorter. Or, better yet, 28 days shorter.
Now, in addition to all of the nagging little problems February always
poses – things like ice, snow, slush, income tax forms, sub-zero
temperatures and various and assorted flu symptoms – we’ll all have an
extra day to feel miserable.
How come the “Leap Year” founders decided to tack the extra day onto
February? Why didn’t they just add it on to June or August?
If
August had an extra day, we could spend it swimming and fishing . . .
The lone February bright spot for me this year is my first wife Sally
and I will celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary on February
23.
Aside from that, I have absolutely nothing to look forward to this
month.
Whenever I sit down and make a list of the things I dislike most, I
always include lima beans, grumpy people, pro basketball games, most
politicians, roller coasters and Monday mornings.
Every time I update my list, February ends up at the top of it.
Now, unfortunately for me, another Leap Year has rolled around . . .
Lucky Bob, huh?
I
already despise February and now I have an extra day to despise it.
At
this point, I don’t have the foggiest idea of how to spend my extra day
this month.
I
suppose I could spend it sleeping. Or use a few of those additional 24
hours to clean out the underwear drawer in my bedroom.
I’m not even excited by the fact that there are two holidays in February
– Valentine’s Day and Groundhog Day.
One time several years ago I suggested to Sally that we make our
Februarys more fun by exchanging gifts on Groundhog Day.
She’s still laughing about that suggestion.
