Writers Group, syndicator of Herman Cain's weekly newspaper
column, today issued the following statement in support of
Mr. Cain from editor in chief, Dan Calabrese: North Star Writers Group is pleased and proud to offer its complete support to our outstanding columnist Herman Cain, in light of ridiculous criticism leveled at him today by the organization calling itself WakeUpWalMart.com. Mr. Cain's August 23rd column - defending Wal-Mart against its critics and labeling many such critics "Hezbocrats" - was well-written and entirely within the bounds of fair commentary and debate. Mr. Cain's membership on the steering committee of the organization Working Families for Wal-Mart is a non-issue from our perspective for an opinion columnist and has never been any secret. Furthermore, WakeUpWalMart.com's demand that this group be disbanded reflects its own intolerance of anyone offering a point of view other than its own. If advocacy groups like this want to win in the arena of ideas, they should try making better arguments instead of decrying the very existence of organizations with another point of view. North Star Writers Group syndicates columnists from both sides of the political spectrum, and we support the right of all our columnists to express their points of view in pointed and thoughtful ways as Mr. Cain has done in this week's column.
