If It’s Good for the
American People, Democrats Are Against It
I
know I am not the only person who sees the blatant strategy of the
Democratic leaders in Congress, which is to continue to ignore the best
interests of the American people for the sake of political power. They
refuse to acknowledge anything that goes right, or pass any legislation
that might suggest that President Bush is doing something right.
The “surge strategy” in Iraq is working according to numerous reports,
including some of the most noticeably liberal media establishments. But
the Democrats only want to focus on the casualties, the mishandling of
the war and the costs of the war, while continuing to declare that the
surge is not working. They also refuse to publicly acknowledge that the
war in Iraq is a major strategic effort in our war against Islamic
fascism.
To not acknowledge progress in Iraq, although admittedly a long time in
coming, is insulting to our soldiers and those who have made the
ultimate sacrifice. It also gives the terrorists a cause for
celebration.
Sen. Harry Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic leaders
in the Senate and House, respectively, have said that President Bush
will go down in history as the worst president ever. They are doing
everything in their power to make that a reality, while making baseless
claims that their actions are for the good of the country.
Sen. Reid, Speaker Pelosi and their Democratic colleagues in Congress
will not vote in favor of anything that might be perceived as a victory
for the Bush administration, and if something is moving in the right
direction, they passionately declare that it is moving in the wrong
direction.
The economy has produced nearly four years of positive GDP growth, but
the Democrats have consistently said it’s moving in the wrong direction.
Now that the economy is expected to slow down in coming months due to
volatility in the housing and financial markets, as confirmed recently
by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, the Democrats are hoping that
the economy completely tanks before the November 2008 elections.
In 2006 the Death Tax was almost killed but missed by three votes in the
Senate. The three-vote deficit was the result of heavy arm twisting by
the Democratic leadership at the last minute. Senators Max Baucus
(D-Montana), Mary Landrieu (D-Louisiana) and Mark Pryor (D-Arkansas)
reversed their previous promises to vote for repeal of the estate tax.
They are all up for re-election in 2008 if anyone is listening.
The Democrat-controlled Congress sent the president a cost-inflated
SCHIP (State Children’s Health Insurance Program) renewal bill, which
also attempted to expand the program to middle class families making
$82,000 a year. When the president vetoed the bill, he was portrayed by
the Democrats and much of the media as “against the children”.
Most recently, after criticizing the Republicans for their spending
excesses under Republican control, the Democrat-controlled Congress,
with the help of some Republicans, voted to override President’s Bush’s
veto of a spending bill filled with excessive “pork”. Just another
little gesture to help make President Bush look bad, even though he was
trying to save the people some of their tax dollars.
Congress’s historically low approval ratings should be a clue to the
Democrat-controlled Congress that they are ignoring what the people
want. A poisonous politically partisan environment in Washington D.C. is
not the will of the people.
Sadly, the Democrats’ “wrong direction on everything” sound-bites are
resonating with a lot of people, who believe that the answer is to put
more Democrats in Congress and maybe even elect a Democrat president in
2008.
If the Democrats’ strategy of ignoring the will of the people succeeds
in giving them more control in Congress and the White House, it will be
an even sadder day for the country.
I
remain enthusiastically hopeful that more people will see the light
before it’s too late.
